The movie Elysium (2013) describes a divided society in the future where a line divides how advanced medical care is accessible to people. In the mid 22nd century, Earth has become overpopulated and heavily polluted, occupied by poor people, while the rich and powerful live on Elysium, a space station in Earth’s orbit equipped with Med-Bays, and advanced medical devices that cure all injuries and diseases.
Med-Bays are a one-size-fits-all device that looks like a CT or MRI scanner. The magic is that these devices can detect and cure any diseases. You just need to lie down on it and the Med-Bay will automatically scan for any conditions, ailments, and diseases, including cancer and leukemia, and then automatically rebuild the body to its original healthy state.
It is not mentioned in the movie what technology is used for the Med-Bay. Sci-fi fans may try to guess. Some say nanotechnology, some say a chemical application, and some say electric or magnetic machinery. If the concept of a Med-Bay is ever feasible, we believe it might be using light.
Light is therapeutic. Humans have known that for centuries. Before molecules and cells were discovered, before the knowledge of scientific mechanisms, humans have observed how sunlight can cure and ease pain.
The famous TV series Star Trek in 1960’s has shown the wonder of light and predicted that light could be the alternative medicine of the future. When commander Riker suffered from deep cuts on his head, he was treated with a light device that regenerated his skin automatically. Similar scenes appeared many times on different characters.
Regardless of whether it is a Med-Bay in Elysium or a dermal regenerator in Star Trek, using light as the ultimate cure is no longer just in our collective imagination or in science fiction. Many indicators have told us that the way humans deal with medical issues will change dramatically during the next several decades. With more and more recent research findings on Photo-Bio-Modulation, we believe that light is the answer.
