Severe COVID-19 can lead to long-term cognitive impairment, equivalent to 20 years of aging, according to a study by Cambridge University. The research, published in the journal eClinicalMedicine, found that people who had severe COVID-19 were more likely to experience brain fog, problems with attention and executive function, and difficulty with processing speed. However, new research suggests light treatment therapy can help reverse this cognitive impairment.

Is It Possible to Reverse the Effects of Covid-19 Through Light Therapy?

Generally, light therapy is a treatment that uses natural or artificial light to improve mood and overall sense of well-being. It is sometimes also called phototherapy or low-level light therapy (LLLT). The most common form of light therapy involves sitting near a special light source that is similar to sunlight for a set amount of time each day. Light therapy has also been shown to affect brain chemicals linked to mood, helping to improve conditions such as seasonal affective disorder (SAD), nonseasonal depression, bipolar disorder, and sleep disorders. Some research also indicates that light therapy may be effective in treating other conditions, such as Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, schizophrenia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and possibly the neurological effects of long-term Covid-19.

A growing body of research suggests that light therapy can be an effective treatment for cognitive impairment, including memory problems and difficulty concentrating. In addition, light therapy has been found to be safe and well-tolerated, with few side effects. As a result, it is a promising treatment option for those with cognitive impairment.

PBM (Photo-Bio-Modulation) is a type of light therapy that can penetrate the body to augment cellular regeneration and promote healing in the brain by utilizing specific wavelengths of light (810 nm and 1064 nm). This technology can potentially reverse the effects of severe Covid-19 cases and restore lost brain function caused by the virus. Up-regulating CCO (Cytochrome C Oxidase) by using light can effectively promote ATP (Adenosine Tri-Phosphate, the energy currency of life) production which can subsequently improve cellular energy production, gene expression, and the prevention of cell death.

PBM is a promising technology that could help treat the most severe cases of Covid-19 and restore lost brain function. We welcome more research using PBM to treat Covid-19 brain fog and related conditions, yet it shows great potential for helping those affected by the virus.
